It’s only been about 4 months, so I thought it was time to write my quarterly blog post. Seriously, though, I may be the laziest blogger of all time. I have all these post ideas-some of them even written but I never sit down and actually put together the posts. And I’m so sorry about that, as I know you all are on the edge of your seat everyday awaiting my next life changing post.
Wait no more. It has arrived. And it’s all about cook books!
Do you guys cook? I’m trying desperately to get into it. Eating, I LOVE. Cooking, not as much. I consider myself a pretty fast learner and at least average in coordination, but without fail, every time I try to move gracefully in the kitchen, I have this out of body experience. Like chopping vegetables, for instance. Suddenly, it’s like I’ve never used my hands before.
What are these bulky things at the ends of my arm? How do they work and why are they holding a sharp, life threatening object?
And then there’s the whole multitasking element. I can do one step at a time, but suddenly, half way through a seemingly straightforward recipe, I’m expected to constantly stir one pot, while simultaneously prepping something in a mixing bowl, all while checking the other thing in the oven. Usually, I manage two out of three and hope for the best.
By the time the food is ready (and usually under or overcooked), I’m a ball of stress and have lost all sense of time and space and appetite. The kitchen looks like a bomb went off. No, I’m sorry I don’t clean as I cook because I’m too busy trying to COOK as I cook. And then I finish off my glass of wine and pat myself on the back because hey, I made something and that’s the point, right?
If I wanted a delicious and carefree meal, I’d have put on some pants and left the house.
Anyway, to try and foster my appreciation for cooking, I’ve been buying cook books that make me so happy I can’t even stand it. And then arranging them prominently in my kitchen so I can see them all the time. My only rule is that it looks good. Not the food, the book itself. I have this theory that if they did a good job on cover design, then I should trust their overall sense of taste. The recipes will have to hold up. And so far, I’ve been right.
So here ya go, my favorite cook books that are inspiring me to be a better cook one cover at a time.
